Paris to Giverny by train

I've been trying to book one-way tickets from Paris to Giverny (Vernon station) and have tried both www.voyages-sncf.com in French and www.tgv-europe.com using the UK as my home country. On the French site I can go into the timetable/schedule and see all of the trips and times for that day, but when I go to book that route at any particular time it tells me that route does not exist. On the UK site, it doesn't even list Vernon as a station so then I used the map planner selecting Paris as my point of departure and Mantes la Jolie as my point of arrival (it doesn't show Vernon, and on the French site it looks like the majority of the trains go through Mantes la Jolie so I chose that as the closest point) and it gives me an error saying there is no direct route.

Is this a route that can't be booked in advance? And if this is the case, how far in advance should I plan to arrive at the station in Paris to make sure we get the train we want?

Colleen,
Our family did this last July so I know it is doable as a round trip anyway. I think we did it through the same website that we booked other train accomodations through (Paris-Avignon). We spent the night there thinking we would need more time but a day is all that is necessary for Monet's Gardens.

Colleen , you do not need to book this in advance, its just go to Gare St Lazare and buy the ticket on day you are going. Trains leave every couple of hours. They will not be "full" and you don't get a price break booking ahead.

I guess you do need to figure out train times though, since no one wants to hang out at station for two hours..LOL

Whether you take regional trains or a Corail train from Gare St-Lazare to Vernon, the fare is €12.10. Reservations aren't possible on regional trains and they're optional on Corail trains. Buy your tickets at any SNCF station or boutique (ticket shop) in Paris.

Thank you so much to all for the responses. I'm kind of a freak when it comes to planning trips (or so my daughter tells me) so I get just a wee bit nervous when I can't book things like this in advance. But looks like I'll just have to take a deep breath on this one, get there early for the time we want, and hope it all works out. Thank you!
