anyone have thoughts on colmar...is it worth a side trip for one night from paris?
Depends on what your taste in art is. There are some lovely timbered houses on the quaysides, and the Unterdenlinden museum is worth a visit, but on the other hand the Louvre and the Cluny Museum have medieval and renaissance artwork as well.
Colmar is a lovely place to stop for a couple of days on the way to somewhere else. But it's too far from Paris for a one night side trip, IMO.
mary, A one night "side trip" to Colmar is certainly possible, especially if you left early one morning and returned home late the following afternoon. Although staying a few nights is desirable, one night will give you an opportunity for a quick look. It's a wonderful smaller city with canals and old timbered buildings, and I quite enjoyed exploring the Unterlinden Museum. There are some nice restaurants in the main part of town, and often some excellent street musicians performing in that area (depending on the time of year you'll be there). The rail trip from Paris Est to Colmar will be at least three hours each way with one change, usually in Strasbourg. The first part of the journey will likely be via TGV (compulsory reservations). If you decide to make the trip, I'd highly recommend Hotel Le Rapp. Happy travels!
Colmar is very nice but deserves at least one night. Strasbourg is right there too and very nice.
From another perspective: Colmar is a lunch stop with an hour's walk afterwards. Probably not worth wasting amost a full day's travel time getting there and back.
I haven't been and can't write from experience, BUT, I've fallen in love with the pictures of these towns that are stones throw away: Ribeauvillé Riquewihr Kaysersberg Turckheim
Eguisheim Some have said to concentrate on these even more than Colmar. We're planning two nights and a full day there in June. Pete
Ribeauvillé and Riquewihr are worth a visit. Picturesque and small wine tasting cellars. Relax and enjoy the visit. We drove from Colmar so don't know if accessible by train. Debbie
Along the wine route are some lovely villages and towns. Interestingly we found they all have different personalities. You wouldn't think that just 5km or 2 or 3 miles apart would make much difference but they are not cookie cutter. We loved most of them. They are a world away from Colmar but very near, and Colmar is a world away from Strasbourg. Just over the German border is Freiberg i.B. and the Schwarzwald (Black Forest). It is an area well worth investigating.
