Paris to Carcassone?

What is the best way to get to Carcassone from Paris? Could I do the trip in one day?

David - According to the DB Bahn website, You would take a train from Paris Austerlitz to Castelnaudary, then take an hour bus ride to Carcassone.

On TGV-Europe you can get a Prem's fare from Paris to Castelnaudary for as low as 54€. I'm not sure of the cost of the bus from Castelnaudary to Carcassone.

Update *****
Tim - I used June 14th. I now see the error of my ways. Rather than cut and paste, I tried to rely on my memory to spell the destination city. Sorry if this caused any undo problems. I forgot to take my Ginko yesterday.

Joel,

What date did you use when you did your timetable searches? When I checked the DB site and the tgv-europe site a moment ago, both show routes with trains all the way--no buses shown at all.

David, I have no idea of what your constraints are, so this may not be practical. But there are some really great places between Paris and Carcassonne, whether by car or rail. Arguably some of those places are even greater than Carcassonne.

So if you had the time to make a longer trip, maybe flying home from Toulouse, you would not regret it.

David, carcoassone is awesome and really worth the trip. We bought a bottle of wine and watched the sunset from the walls, it was very nice. A nice way to get there from Paris is to take the TGV to Avignon, then rent a car. All the major rental agencies have shops right there at the new Avignon train station. The car allows you to see other places along the way to carcassone, such as Pont du Gard or the colisuem in Niemes
