My parents-who are from India- are visiting France in November. They would like to visit Berner Oberland for 2 days, take the train from Paris and stay overnight. What route would you suggest? They do not take the cold well! However, it is a once in a lifetime trip for them...
As far as the route, I would suggest Paris to Basel to Interlaken. You might also go from Paris to Strasbourg to Basel to Interlaken.
As for the cold. I can empathize. My parents moved to So. California as children and spent their lives there. When they came to Pennsylvania at Christmas to visit their grandchildren they were very concerned about the cold. I just told them that despite the cold, life goes on. Learn to dress in layers, long underwear, normal clothes, a sweater, a down parka. You'll survive.
For the train part, there are excellent high-speed TGV trains that run from Paris to Basel Switzerland. From there, you transfer to very nice trains that can have you at the Interlaken Ost train station in 2hrs. From there, you change to the Jungfraubahn train for the 22 minute scenic trip into Lauterbrunnen. From Lauterbrunnen, you can transition to the higher Swiss towns of Wengen, Murren or Gimmelwald.
For the weather part, I wouldn't expect it to be warm. Perhaps a bit of early winter snow at the upper levels. Note that if your travel is in late November, you should inquire with the hotels to see if they are open. Many begin closing early in November to transition from summer to the ski season.
Cold or not, they should make this trip. It's fantastic.
It is a long ride w/ transfers from Paris. It is also very cold there in Nov. the touring includes gondola tram rides up the mtns. 2 days is insufficient time for this beautiful area and Nov is not the best time to go. think carefully bef you send them there with those restraints.
It's not that long a ride. It can be done in 6.5 hours to Interlaken Ost station with just one transfer in Basel. Check schedules at the Swiss Rail site:
Thanks for all the suggestions. I will look up Swiss rail. Unfortunately, is is the only time they can visit, so they will need to bundle up!
