My Wife and I are traveling to Paris Fr. in Sept., 2012. We are planning at least a 3-day trip to Normandy... We would like to go directly from Chas. De Gaul AP to Bayeaux via train. Questions: A) What's the most likely train station we'el be leaving from? B) Cheapest non-taxi method to reach train station? C) Where do we pruchase train tickets on line?
D) Any thoughts on hotels / eating places you might reccomend. Thanks! T. Scatchard
All trains from Paris to Bayeux depart from Gare Saint-Lazare. Depending upon the departure time, you will either take a direct train to Bayeux or you will have to change trains in Caen. Take the RER B from CDG to Gare du Nord. Walk through the connecting tunnels to the Magenta RER station and take the RER E to Haussmann - Saint-Lazare. Walk to Gare Saint-Lazare. The current fare is €9.25, but there usually is a fare increase around 1 July each year. For a zoomable map of the metro and RER system, go here: http://tinyurl.com/6xmvms4. You need to allow up to one hour to clear immigration/passport control at CDG and another hour to get to Gare Saint-Lazare. You can get discount fare tickets for Paris-Bayeux if you book well in advance (up to three months allowed) on www.tgv-europe.com. However, those tickets will be for a specific departure time and are non-exchangeable and non-refundable. If your plane is late and you miss that train, your tickets will be worthless and you'll have to buy full fare tickets on a later train.
Tim has given you a great layout,,but just because you may be very tired, I will still suggest a taxi as a possible option.. its 19 euros for two of you to take RER in,, and about 50 euros for a taxi, so about a 30 euro difference , which if exhausted may seem rather attractive. Train tickets ( RER to go into Paris) are available at the airport station, they do not sell them online. Tickets to Bayeaux ,, look at sncf.com ,, book earlier rather then later as dates and prices vary,, prices are always cheaper when you book ahead. It may be too soon for September to book.
If you are renting a car for Normandy, it might make sense to just pick up the car at the airport and then head to Normandy. We did this on our last trip to France and it worked well, although we were a bit disoriented exiting the airport before our GPS located us! We stopped in Giverny on the way to Normandy, which was nice to walk around and eat lunch after the long flight. Have a great trip!
If you plan to rent a car in Normandy, you might find it more convenient to do so in Caen, versus Bayeux.
As to hotel... we've stayed at Hotel d"Argouges in Bayeux at least 5 times because we like it very much. The owner, Mme Ropartz, and her staff are wonderful. Large rooms, large bathrooms, comfortable beds, very clean, nice gardens, off street parking, in center of town but set back from the street, very quiet, and great breakfasts. It's like staying in a manor house. Love it. Bayeux itself is very charming. Don't miss the excellent WWII museum there, if you're interested in that.
Hotel Mogador in Bayeaux(RS guidebbok) has a good location and excellent service. The owner was helpful in arranging a rental car for us.
