My husband and I are traveling by train from Paris to the Rhine Valley - Bacharach - with 3 kids (9 to 14). We have 4 or 5 days including our stay in Bacharach. Any suggestions on places to see along the way?
Patty, One possibility would be the Alsace region, staying in Colmar. It's an incredibly beautiful area with lots of vineyards. While there you could visit the Unterlinden Museum, which is a bit smaller so it probably wouldn't tax the "attention span" of your kids. Another option would be to head straight for Bacharach and use that as a "home base" for touring other sights in that area. Some possibilities would be the impressive Burg Eltz (on the Mosel), Rheinfells (St. Goar), a cruise down the Rhine on a KD Boat (perhaps the elegant Goethe paddlewheeler) or a visit to the Peace Museum at the former Remagen (Ludendorff) Bridge (liberated by U.S. forces in WW-II). Your children might find it interesting to do a bit of research on the history of the bridge. Happy travels!
HI Patty,
I don't think my kids would be interested in vineyards, but they would love to see a medieval castle under consstruction. There is a group doing this in Guedelon, about 2 hours south of Paris. I'd spend a day going through there! http://guedelon.fr/index.php?lg=en
When you enter Germany, travel (via Saarbrücken) into the Mosel Valley for a stop in Cochem. Cochem is a very scenic town with its own castle, a falconry demonstration on the castle grounds, a cool chairlift ride, a waterpark, a boat dock for river cruises, lots of hotel and dining choices, and plenty of biking and hiking opportunities: http://www.brodyaga.ru/images/Germany/Cochem%206.jpg http://www.falknerei-reichsburg-cochem.de/fotobuch.htm
