We usually stay in Hotel Muguet, between les Invalides and the Eiffel Tower. We'd like to change and explore the St. Germain area. Any suggestions for a moderately priced hotel in that area?

I have stayed here twice, in 2005 and 2006, and it was terrific. Perfect location. Bon Voyage!
We enjoyed our stay at Hotel de Sevres located at 22 rue de l'Abbe Gregoire,
75006 (www.hoteldesevres.com). It is located near the Saint Placide Metro stop. It is on a quiet side street with several good pastry shops nearby. The rooms are small, but quiet and clean. We payed 110 euro for 2 adults.
Sue, we stayed at the Hotel le Clement on rue Clement in the St. Germain area. We paid 140 euros a night for two twin beds in a courtyard room. We were very pleased with both the accomodation and the location. We were in walking distance of so many wonderful sights - a few blocks from the Seine, Notre Dame, Luxembourg Gardens, St. Sulpice Church, etc.... Some of the double rooms are quite small but our courtyard room was a nice size by European standards. We loved the area and would definitely stay there again.
I have stayed at the Hotel Le Regent,, the standard rooms are very very small, but the location is excellant , cafes, atm, markets, and Seine all close by. We did stay in their "deluxe" room, which isn't deluxe( but IS nice and has all amenties like a/c fridge , safe and larger bathroom) which would be what most of North Americans would consider average in size.
Pat, I just checked the website for le Regent and their standard doubles, which you say are very small, are 175 euro. I find that a shocking price, frankly, so it's back to the Hotel Ideal for the mister and me at half that price, for a good sized room.
Gee Norma, I just looked at site now, they are offering rates from 125-170 euros on the standard rooms and 170 on the deluxe rooms on special. The standard rooms are 11 metres square, a tad bigger then the Hotel Clement rooms noted to be 10 metres square.
This is definately not the cheapest one can do in Paris, but the location is prime,, but, rooms are small. I think if one got the room for 125-135 euros they would be getting a fair deal .
I would also reccomend Hotel Des Grand Hommes, but, it is not in the 6th as requested, but last year I got a special summer room rate of 118 euros a night and that included breakfast, a very good deal if you look at their regular prices, and I loved that location also!
The special rates for le Regent are a bit better, I agree, Pat. The thing is, that for us location is not really as important as it is for a lot of people who post here, which is why we usually end up in the 15th or the 11th.
Norma, I have two trains of thought on location. I agree that staying in a less central( although still easy to assess quick metro connection )arrondissmont is a good idea,, you tend to get more bang for the dollar, and bigger rooms to boot, but, I always figure that when making suggestions for a first timer, or people with kids etc,, that staying really central is nice, just to walk out the door that first morning and not learn the metro that day, but just wander the area around your hotel.
I have stayed in the 14th and so far, got the biggest nicest room that way,, the area itself was not paritcularily fab, although it had a brasserie I love nearby) but the metro was just out the front door!
I guess I shouldn't assume OP needs to stay central, their post does say " we usaully stay" meaning they are not first timers, I guess I didn't really focus on that. They did mention St Germain, but as we know it is hard to find really budget places in that popular area( but not impossible!)
