Paris: St Denis

Hello All, What are your impressions of the 10th arrondissement? I am planning a trip for my employer; they are looking to stay in St Denis. Are there restaurants and cafes to enjoy in the area? Is it a hassle to get to the main hot spots in Paris? All comments and suggestions welcome! Thank you.

Alexina: There is some confusion on someone's part. First of all, St. Denis is not in the 10th. In fact it is beyond the perpherique the highway which belts the city of Paris. I have a feeling that St. Denis is not a place your employer would want to stay, even if the basilica there is a tourist destination, the rest of the place is not. There is a street called Faubourg St. Denis in the 10th but it is not very salubrious in parts, it is right next to the Gare du Nord, and I personally would not want to stay on that street. You need to double check all this with your boss. And good luck.

While not filled with the touristy Parisian things to do, the 10eme arrondissement does have a Parisian charm about it. There you have the Canal St. Martin, and of course several restaurants and cafés to try out. It is no hassle to get anywhere in Paris, as the metro covers so much of the area. Keep a metro map handy, and locate your nearest metro stop and you're on your way! You'll love it. Also, may I add that St. Denis is a suburb of Paris, and not in the 10th arrondissement. Double check to see where you're staying. I wouldn't stay in St. Denis, and it's not the nicest place to stay (unless you have a late night event at the Stade de France)

Thank you! I now understand much more clearly the location of St Denis! I think we will try staying elsewhere.

Alexina, You asked about what it's like in the 10th Arrond ? It's where Gare du Nord is located and the area I always stay in Paris, the last time last summer. Several restaurants of various cuisines are there...French, pizza/Italian, Chinese, North African, etc. and cafes. The 10th is very convenient, which one of the main reasons I choose the stay in this district...the RER station to the airport is here, as well as buses so that you don't have to rely on the Metro. Gare du Nord is a main Metro station and junction point. There is a laundrymat only a few mins walk from the Gare du Nord, a post office, numerous 2 and 3 star hotels, internet cafes, and it's close to Montmartre...25 mins walk. For me the closeness to Euro Star and Gare de l'Est is important. Compared to other tourists, esp. in the summer, it's true that Americans are vastly outnumbered in the 10th.
