Paris on July 14 !?!

We are planning to be in Paris during the week-end prior to and including Monday July 14. I'm sure this will be an exciting time, with fireworks etc. However, with this being a national holiday, I am concerned about the following...
--closed museums, attractions,etc.on the 14th?
--closed museums etc on the weekend because of July 14 falling on a Monday?
--extra long wait lines?
--availability of hotel rooms at a reasonable price?

--would it be better to redraft our plans so that we are not in Paris around that time?
Any advice from someone who has experienced this French national holiday would be appreciated.

I was in Paris for Bastille Day in 1997 and LOVED IT.
We took a dinner cruise on the Seine that ended with a view of the late night fireworks at the Eiffel Tower. The parade down the Champs Elysee was too martial for my sensibilities, but I must admit it was exciting. We did not have any problem with museum/attraction closings.

I was in Paris for Bastille Day 4 years ago and it was great! Now, I was there for a 6 wk study abroad, so we didn't worry to much about the museums during the holiday, can't help you there, but it's definitely a fun time to be in Paris! We watched the fireworks from in front on the Eiffel tower, then saw a parade, ended up going to a fireman's ball with some locals we met. We had a great time with lots of fun memories, I would recommend it!

I was in Paris a few years ago, and we headed to Chartres around the 12th, and spent the 14th there. It was incredible fun! Nothing closed anywhere, just a big fireworks display at midnight, that must have lasted an hour..with the biggest and most amazing fireworks I've ever seen!

Just one thing: most american's might not be used to the fact that anyone who wants can shoot off fireworks...I was a bit jumpy when kids in the crowd started some that were waterfalls right in the middle of where we were standing...but people with little kids did not seem worried at all.

It was fun to share in it, and I hope you have a blast.

Note: before we left Paris on the 12th, they were already setting up all kinds of stadium seating, etc, in the Place de Bastille, and along some of those central roads in that area...I'm guessing that it, as well as the Eiffel Tower, are quite the gathering places for events and fireworks.
