My family (3,8,10) kids, husband the grandparents will be in Paris on Bastille Day. Any suggestions on what to do/not do?
hi, mingle with the locals, celebrate and enjoy happy trails.
Here is a link to the city's official website guide to Jully 14 activities. There is a huge military parade (most easily seen on television), fireworks, picnic, a concert at Place de la Bastille and local festivals. Note in particular the festivities at local fire halls the evening before. http://goparis.about.com/gi/o.htm?zi=1/XJ&zTi=1&sdn=goparis&cdn=travel&tm=15&gps=462_26_1023_1&f=00&su=p531.60.342.ip_&tt=11&bt=3&bts=3&zu=http%3A//en.parisinfo.com/shows-exhibitions-paris/bastille-day-in-paris/ Wikipedia recounts the history here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bastille_Day This site also has some practical information, particularly about Metro station closings for the parade http://www.destination360.com/europe/france/paris/bastille-day An Internet search will turn up activities aimed at children.
Michelle: We were in Paris on Bastille Day in 2004 with the kids (8-10). We has a blast. We assembled a big picnic and headed for the Champs du Mars so that we could see the fireworks against the backdrop of the Eiffel Tower. Best fireworks I ever saw. In addition to that wonderful memory the kids are still talking about the mad crazy rush for the Metro as the fireworks wound down. We held tight to the kids as we crammed into the subway cars like sardines - everyone was laughing and singing - it was incredible. Have fun.
