I'm going to be in Paris next month with my 16 yr old. Does the free museum entry apply to her or only to European citizens? When I buy my ticket do I have to ask for a "free" entry for her? I'm also considering the Paris Museum pass. In that case, what do I do for her? Hoping to get some clarification for this from those of you who have travelled with their teenager.
I don't have a kid and am not one myself, but I am in Paris at museums every year and have observed that there are discounts for students. If she has a student ID, I think she ought to bring it. A couple of years ago my mother - who is in her mid 70s - wangled a discount at the Louvre that way. She just gave the ticket agent her Michigan State University ID card and asked for the student discount. And got it, no questions asked. So there's that! :-) Also, try out some of the AWESOME free museums, like the Carnevalet and the collection at the Petit Palais. That way, no worries, and neither of you pay!
Under 18 is free and only YOU need a ticket. Paris Museum Pass...you know I just did this last year with my teenage son, but I can't remember. There is a separate line for people with the Museum Pass so that you can "skip" the line. Yea right - nowadays EVERYBODY has the Pass because EVERYBODY wants to skip the line.
Maybe I'm just over thinking it. What I'm wondering is if I have a museum pass or ticket, does she need to get a ticket that says she's a student and its labeled free? Or does she just walk in with me thru the entrance and show her passport?
From the pass website: "• Do children need a PARIS MUSEUM PASS? No, children under 18 and european citizens under 26 are allowed FREE access in most of the museums and monuments included in the PARIS MUSEUM PASS itinerary.
• Do children in my party under 18 years of age have to queue up to get in? No. The few establishments that issue tickets for free entry are not among the most often visited attractions." From this page. (then click on 'With the Children') Wow - have a great trip!
I can tell you this from multiple experiences , with the museum pass your child walks in with you, ( with his/her id, passport is best) at Louvre, Orsay , Conceirge , St Chapelle , Arc D'Triomphe , and Cluny, but at Invalids ( the Army Museum ) you do get a "free ticket" for your child, but there has never been more then a few people in line there when I have gone so not really an issue. ( PS its a great museum worth visiting) .
Thats's what I needed to know, thanks. I didn't want to have her walk up with me and then be told she has to get into the ticket buying line to get a 'free' entry ticket. 25 days to go yippee!!!
I've had the same experience as Pat, with the addition of needing a ticket for my kids at the Archaeological Crypt at the Paris of Notre Dame - but there was NO line there. Read the information carefully on the museum pass as there are museums covered by it that will charge admission for a child. They are not any of the more popular ones. And bring passport or proof that your daughter is under 18 so you can prove it if questioned. Over 18 and you'll need to prove EU citizenship for the discounted or free admission.
