I have 1 night in Paris before taking a late morning train from the Montparnasse station. I've not stayed in that area before. Any thoughts re safety of the neighborhood> (I'll be traveling alone and out after dark) Any hotel near the station you particularly liked? I'd like to pay 100E or less if possible; simple is fine, but clean and secure is essential. Thanks
The area is safe. You could enlarge the area for your stay to neighboring or close-by metro stops as well, Vavin, Raspail, Port Royal, even toward St. Germain and the Latin Quarter. Everything is fairly close.
We stayed 9 days in an apartment off rue Raymond Losserand (Pernety metro) near the gare Montparnasse, had no safety concerns with the neighborhood. I don't know about specific hotels but there's a great variety in the area, as in any station neighborhood. If your schedule allows you might consider going up the Tour Montparnasse, which is right by the station. An easy cheap view over the city, it's not the Eiffel but you can see the Eiffel. And going to the top is one way to avoid having to look at the Tour Montparnasse!
I stayed in that area, at the Hotel Innova last June. It was a decent hotel - clean, quiet despite being on a busy street, and the price was right. It's right across from the Pasteur Metro, but it's also a 7 minute walk to the Montparnasse station. However there is no A/C so if you're going in summer...consider yourself warned. Hottest night I've ever spent in a hotel. But if the weather had been cooler, it would have been fine. Edit: And I found the area to be fine. It's "busy" around the station and a little confusing because of the big wide busy streets, but it did not strike me as dodgy or unsafe.
We have stayed at Hotel Delambre Montparnasse in the past and we will be staying there this May. We are paying 99Euros per night (booked directly through the hotel). We love the neighborhood...lots of history there...good restaruants and famous cafes nearby and only about 3 blocks from the Gare Monteparnasse. Bill Young
