Paris metro question: St Michel Notre-Dame

Our apartment[Rue St Andre Des Arts]is very near the St Michel metro stop. If we take the RER B from CDG, the stop is St Michel Notre Dame. Are these two station connected underground or do we have to transfer. Is this a confusing station to navigate with lots of exits that will confuse the first timer to Paris?

Yes, the stations are connected underground. Go to www.ratp.fr and click on the British flag for English. Under the heading "Getting around the Ile-de-France region" you can use the Route Planner. Choose "station" for your departure point and type "Aeroport". Pick either CDG 2 TGV or CDG 1. Choose "station" for your arrival point and type "Saint-Michel." You will see a detailed street map of the area around Saint-Michel. Walk from the RER station to your apartment.

As far as I know, the two stations are connected underground. There will be signs in the RER station directing you to exits and to the Metro. Inside Metro stations are maps indicating exits and you can pick the best exit for your purpose.

Sorry, off topic, but I Just had to say...I love, love, love, that RAPT interactive map (found out about it here)! I especially love the time column and total time. Not only does it give you the fastest route, but if you put in an address it will include walking time to the station, walking time between stations, and total time to your destination. Not knowing the city, I had no idea how long it would take us to walk, Metro, correspond, RER, walk and finally get there. It's important when you have reservations or need to be on a specific train out of the city. Love it, thanks!

Something to consider is that it is often easier, and more pleasant, to navigate your way around above ground, as opposed to the tunnels. (Especially if you have luggage and are tired after a long flight). Look at or take a good street map, get to the surface as soon as possible. Then look for the right direction.

Many times a stop is listed as "one" stop but the different platforms are long distance and many stairs away. With lots of people walking.

BTW: While I admit I have never travelled in Paris in June and July I have spent quite a bit of time there, and have found that most people are both helpful and friendly in the metro and above ground. I have had women and men older and young stop and help me with my rolling luggage in the middle of rush and take the time to point me in the right direction.

Peggy -

This station may be confusing to you - underground - if you are wanting to walk to the metro station "Saint Michel" (line 4) coming from the RER B. Rather look for the Sortie - Fontaine Saint Michel. You will arrive in a beautiful square away from the traffic along the Quai and Pont Saint Michel. You will ascend facing the direction of the bridge - fountain to your right. Turn to your left to find rue Saint Andre des Arts is just off the square - the roads are easy to manage there (small).

Just a note why the underground is confusing here - Line 4 - St. Michel is only easy to get to with signs from RER C.

Another note - Metro line 10 stop that is in the same area - is Cluny Sorbonne and connects to RER B and RER C.

I hope that helps.
