Paris Metro

Does the Paris Metro have a payment method like the Oyster Card in London?

Yes, there are various passes but best to use a packet of 10, called a carnet (pronounced car-nay). Just buy more when you need to. Best to buy from an agent in the larger stations as US credit cards can be problematic with the vending machines. US cards do not
have chips as European ones do. Check in RS France and City Guides. Bobbie

There are usually only 2 good choices. 1. as mentioned above, buy packs of 10 tickets at a discount. 2. The Navigo Decouverte pass. You pay €5 for the pass, then you charge it for a week at a time. The thing is, the week starts on Monday morning and ends on Sunday night. If you can get at least 5 days out of it, it is usually the best deal. At 4 days, it may not be worth it.

Make sure you have an extra passport picture in case you decide to buy a Navigo-you stick it on yourself, under an adhesive strip on the ID part of the card. This time last year, Metro ticket booth personnel were trying to shift Carnet purchases to machines. This was very difficult if you did not have the proper cash to put in the machine-they didn't take American swipe-credit cards. I also noticed that some of the newer machines print ten tickets to order-there was no booklet.
