Hi everyone
When we were looking at our European map last night, we started considering the idea of hiring a car in Paris and driving for a week or so through France, possibly finishing in Lyon and then getting a train from there into Switzerland. We have never driven in Europe before, but we think with the aid of a GPS we will be ok. We were wonderring if anyone has any suggestions regarding this idea... where are some nice spots to stay or stop between Paris and Lyon? Would we have time to go further south? Would it be worth driving all the way down to Provence and then going into Italy from there? So many options, any thoughts?? Thanks, Cathy
PS We will be there early September, if that makes any difference!
Driving in France is quite easy and lets you get off the beaten path to enjoy the rural areas. Burgundy is between Paris and Lyon and you could easily spend a week there. Provence begins about an hour south of Lyon - you can cover quite a bit of ground quickly by France's Autoroutes.
Thanks Doug! It's good to know that driving in France is relatively easy... will now do some reading about Burgundy!!!
Hi Cathy,
Driving in France is easy enough but parking is not. For so many towns trains are the way to go. I loved Lyon, I would stay where Rick suggests. As someone else mentioned Burgundy (in particular Beaune) is quite lovely. You can rent a car right at the train station in Beaune. The TGV (super fast train) from Paris to Nice is a half a day of relaxing travel. Stay close to the old town if you can. I'll be there in September also. Let us know if you've decided on more details as far as itinerary and we could offer more suggestions.
