Paris Long Stay for Internship Accomodation

I know a lot about Paris, but I never lived there. I lived near Chartres for about a year. I have a 2 friends that just landed an internship in Paris for a month and are looking for somewhere (student cheap) to stay. Any suggestions? I remember once hearing about a convent that offered rooms, but never got the name. They're only going to be en ville for a month. (so no use for the APL) Thanks so much! Alex

A month is an awkward time frame. They could also try craigslist, or www.leboncoin.fr. Another idea is to google "colocation Paris" and maybe come up with someone looking for a roommate. Or if it's a summer internship, they could see about subletting someone's apt when they're on vacation. They can try to reach out to the expat community via angloinfo or the American Church. Bonne chance!

I think Ceidleh's suggestion of an apt is an excellent one. One month rental is always much cheaper than their weekly rate. If you go to parisnotes.com there is a long list of reputable apt rental agencies in Paris.

Alexander: Forgot to add they also may want to take a look at the offerings on www.sabbaticalhomes.com and see what they have for short term rentals (one listed in Montparnasse for 950 Euro per month). Sabbatical homes also offers some "house sitting" opportunities on occassion which might work in their favor if they are in a summer internship. Loads of French take August off as their holiday month and may be in need of someone to stay home with the pets, water the plants, etc.

What's their actual budget since "student cheap" can vary from student to student depending on their resources? For a stay of a month, they may be better off splitting the rent on a small studio or 1 bedroom apartment that sleeps 2. This could give them some decent amenities like WiFi, washer/dryer and access to their own kitchen so they can cook. A studio or 1 bedroom will get cheaper (and larger) if they consider looking outside the really popular "tourist" arrondissements and head towards the outlying ones where the working class Parisian families and young professionals live. Instead of looking at places like the 4th, 5th or 6th they should look outwards at places like the 10th Arron., or higher, where they can get more for their Euro and still be a quick metro ride away from the center of Paris. Even a place immediately outside of Paris that is on an easy train line into the city (like La Garenne which is a 10 minute train into Gare St. Lazare) might be a good choice for an affordable short term apartment. Check websites like VRBO.com and Airbnb.com as some of the owners are willing to rent for a month and even a few of the owners who list weekly rates for their apartments may consider negotiating for a lower rate if they know that someone is interested in locking in with them for a month long stay. You have to watch it with some of the European convents and check what their rules are. A lot of the convent stays seems to have rules in place about when the doors are locked for the night, quiet hours, etc. Some people are fine with that, but Paris is a late-night city and if the doors are locked at 10PM you won't want to be scrambling to end your night to get back.

Thank you so very much, all of you. I will forward this information to them. My experience in France was a year long, so it was easier for me. I lived in a "foyer de jeunes travailleurs." In Paris, that's not so easy, since they're always booked SOLID. Thanks again .:D
