I'd like to hear suggestions about how to manage to visit Mount Saint Michel and the Loire Valley from Paris. I don't have much time to do so, but this is what i'm thinking. I'd take a train very early from Paris to Tours, and visit from there 2 or 3 of the most beautiful chateaux (definetely Chenonceau). Stay the night in the area, maybe in Tours, I don't know where is most conveniente. The next day, travel to Mount Saint Michel, no idea about the travel time here by train. Visit and stay the night there (very recommended by other travelers to do so, because it gets very busy during the day) and then go back to Paris early in the morning the following day. Is this doable? Any kind of suggestion is more than welcome! This is part of a large trip around Europe, and I'll obviuosly stay in Paris a few days apart from this. I'll be travelling during summer, July/August.
We did that trip in June. Had a wonderful time. We rented a car in Paris, drove to Amboise and made that our base as we toured the chateaux. We stayed in Amboise for three days, it is a charming town, then drove from Amboise to Mont St Michel. Having a GPS system is a must for driving in France. You might want to take the train to Tours and pick up a rental car there. The rental car makes it much easier for touring the chateaux. The drive from Amboise to Mont St Michel is about three hours. From Mont St Michel to Paris took us five hours.
You can't get all the way to Mont St Michel by train, you have to connect to a bus to get to the Mont. Or drive but that has its downside.
Yeah, you're right, I just checked... I should take a bus from Rennes...
