Two women traveling November 2010; interests are boulangerie/patisserie, cafes, resturants, close proximity to metro's. Looking for a 2-3* hotel in a safe walking location where locals live. Like to spend time in local markets too. Want to get away from the tourist areas. Have been researching the above locations and would appreciate your input.
We go to Paris often and have stayed in many areas - Stayed 6 wks in a hotel a block from the La Motte Picquet/Grenelle Metro on one trip - it's a great location for the Metro (3 lines intersect there), the outdoor market on Saturday (?) is one of the best in Paris and a really good Monoprix - but other than that, not a good location for places to eat, patisseries or boulangeries. It's a very working class neighborhood far from the center, near Notre Dame, where I prefer to be... Cardinal Lemoine is better, but still a bit removed... Not familiar with Passy.
Passy is one of the most upscale residential areas in Paris. Lots of very nice food shops but expect to pay sky-high prices, although the quality should be worth it. Hotels tend to be of the "boutique" small and pricey variety.
Pab - I love your priorities. Of the three, I'd vote for Cardinal Lemoine but there are plenty of other good locations. Be sure to visit Gerard Mulot, 76 rue de Seine, for wonderful bread and pastries. There's a great Sunday market at Boulevard Raspail.
