My sister and I are traveling to Paris, the Interlocken area, Salzburg, Hallstatt, and then to the Munich area. Does anyone have suggestions for places to stay, especially in Paris and Munich? I'm a student, and therefore on a budget, so nothing too expensive. :)
Well if you're looking at hostels I would suggest the AIJ in Paris, http://www.aijparis.com/
I stayed there this past fall and will stay there again for my trip in May. They are very cheap and very clean. After looking at other hostel reviews this was the best (they don't have reviews on the hostel booking sites b/c you can only book with them directly - there are some reviews on tripadvisor).
Also check out statravel.com and studentuniverse.com - both websites cater to students. I booked my flight tickets on student universe last fall and got a great deal.
Try Hotel Perfect in Paris - it's in Montmartre. It's small and basic, but a good location, clean, and the staff is helpful. We had a double with shared bath for €22/person/night.
Try Easy Palace Station Hotel in Munich. Near the train station, double with shared bath for €49/night. If you don't mind staying in a 4-6 person dorm, it drops to €20/person/night.

For the other cities, go to Barnes and Noble/Borders, or the library and check out Let's Go Western Europe. You'll find lots of hostels and budget hotels.
I stayed at the Hotel Atlanta in Munich, which is in the RS Germany guide. It was relatively clean & had a nice breakfast included in the price. I don't remember the room cost but on that trip I was on a budget (I mainly stayed at hostels) so I know it must've been pretty affordable (i.e. less than 50 euros a night for a single room). I don't know if it's true of all the rooms, but I had to walk about 10 feet from my door to the shared bathroom, which was no big deal to me. In fact, I think it's kind of part of the "European hotel experience"...one which is quickly becoming extinct. You have to walk upstairs to get to the hotel, but it was VERY well-located...close to the U-Bahn stop, on a quiet street about 2 blocks from Marienplatz, the Glockenspiel and all the good shopping.
Be sure to check out the famous "Free Tour" from New Munich Tours which organize in front of the Glockenspiel. www.newmunich.com. Great tour...it really is free, too, no strings!
Have fun!
salzburg-- pension elisabeth.. hallstat--rooms from 20 euros each.
has anyone ever stayed at either Gasthof Simony or Pension Sarstein in Hallstatt? These are the two I've narrowed it down to, in Hallstatt at least. Just wondering which one everyone thinks is better.
Hi Lindsey, In Paris I stayed at the Grand Hotel Levesque (based on a Rick Steves recommendation). It was a good bang for the buck.
In Interlaken, I highly recommend the Balmer's hostel there. A friend and I stayed in a double private room for almost nothing. It is a great place to stay with fun people, cheap food, etc.
Lindsey, We stayed at Gastoff Simony in Hallstatt in 2006. It is exactly as Rick describes it - creaky. It's like a really big old house with VERY creaky stairs. Susanne, the woman who runs it is extremely nice, but doesn't speak much English. The rooms are very basic, but full of character. If you're looking for 3 star comfort you should stay somewhere else, but we loved it and would definately stay there again.
lindsey, in Salzburg Hôtel zur Goldenen Ente. Click on this ....
It's an incredibly nice place to sleep and eat. Historic too...
