What numbered districts in Paris do a mom & adult daughter want to avoid for hotel accomodations? Any places or particular districts u would recommend for fabric shops, and local wares? How 'bout your favorite cafe & its whereabouts? many thx!
I don't know what arrondissement to avoid but I prefer the 7th for it's quietness & feeling of safety. I'm in my 60s & travel alone. I know of a quilt shop in the 5th. If that's the type of fabric shop you're interested in, let me know. I like almost all of the cafes. Just pick one near your hotel to use as your local while you're there. Also, there's a shop, La Tuile a Loup at 35 rue Daubenton in the 5th that carries regional crafts - pottery, baskets etc. It's been a few yrs since I was there. In my view, the best kitchenware shop (especially for copper) is E. Dehillerin in the 1st at 18 rue Coquilliere.
You would probably enjoy Hotel Des Grande Ecoles located in arr 5 on Cardinal Lemoine St. It is well located for lots of cafes, restaurants, shops, etc. and easily walkable to Notre Dame. It has an enclosed garden terrace. We paid about 115E for two two years ago. This fabric store was recommended to me from an online sewing group. Take metro to Anvers and go to Rue Steinerque. Turn right on St. Pierre and look for Marche St. Pierre. The store has five floors of fabric. Please report back on this store--I will be in Paris next April and look forward to visiting this place. Also, you may consider going to Bouchera--lots of linens, etc. Can't remember exact location but found it in Paris Born To Shop book.
For fabrics and housewares, reasonably priced, and easy to find, Bouchara (at the corner of rues de la Chaussée d'Antin and Lafayette - 75009) near the big dept stores of Printemps and Les Galeries Lafayette (which I think both have fabric depts, or used to). Also the Souleiado and Les Olivades shops have pricey but wonderful Provencal fabrics. Big BHV dept store (52-64 Rue de Rivoli) has lots of home improvement items, including i think fabric. Also I check the linens dept for sales on flat sheets and pillow cases. For a grittier experience the 17e (below Sacre Cour) used to have a lot of hole in the wall fabric stores, more like little outlets. You would need to check updated info.
