I am traveling to Paris by train from London with my 14 year old son for a 4 day excursion to Paris (arriving Gare du Nord) I would like to spend a max of $200-$250 per night for a room, but would like it to be clean, in a cool section of town and possibly have AC (there is a potential for a heat wave in August, right?) I would love suggestions from who know Paris.
My husband and I stayed at the Hotel France Albion in August 2009 for three nights. It is in the 9th Arrondisment and has two metro stops, one at either end of the street it is on. The rooms had AC (yeah, that August was very hot!) and we paid approx $120 CDN per night (booked through travelocity). Here is the link http://www.albion-paris-hotel.com/#IN
If we ever go back to Paris, I imagine we would stay here again. We could see the Eiffel Tower from our hotel room! We spent a lot of our time walking throughout Paris and found the area convenient. There was a nice boulangerie one street over that we got our breakfast at, rather than the overpriced breakfast you find at most hotels. There is also a grocery store (Shopi) on this street.
Stayed at Relais Bosquet, about six blocks from the ET last June. When we booked, I didn't even realize the room had AC. It was 90+ degrees when we were there and the AC was excellent. We walked everywhere from this location, although if you prefer a bit less walking, you could use the Batobus to get to sites farther east, such as Notre Dame or the Marais. We walked over to the ET both nights to enjoy the light show.
WE go to Paris often and although we go in the fall, there are many nice hotels with AC. I would recommend the hotel du Cadran or the Relais Bosquet. Both have special internet rates. Both are lovely , and, although they are more money than some , they are very nice. They are close to the Eiffel Tower and the Rue Cler area.
"cool section of town"... do you mean temperature or ambiance? I like the 4th (Marais and Ile Saint Louis), 5th (Latin Quarter) and 6th (St. Germain) arrondissements the best. They are in the heart of Paris and most fun areas imo. The 7th, where rue Cler is, is too far from that area for me. Check RS recommendations and TripAdvisor. My favorite hotel is Hotel de Lutece on Ile Saint Louis (my favorite neighborhood of all) but I can't remember if it has AC.
Definitely get one with AC. What if it is one of those hotels where you can't open windows and it is 90 degrees out. This would really spoil your vacation.
Be sure to get RS Paris guide book is you do not already have it. It certainly has lots of information that you will find helpful.
We are booked in August at Relais Bosquet. If the hotel is as nice as the persons I've emailed with we'll be happy.
My wife and I always stay at the Hotel Castex, in the Marais district. It is air-conditioned and very comfortable, though the rooms, as is often the case in Paris, are small. The location is hard to beat, as it is near hordes of restaurants, cafes, and boutiques, and a very short walk from the Isle St Louis, Notre Dame, and Place des Vosges. Check their website for information and pictures, as the pictures are accurate in showing what the hotel looks like.
I always suggest l'Hotel Hameau, 48 rue de Passy. It's in the 16th, a five minute walk from Trocadero and the Eiffel Tower, yet "far enough off the beaten path" to be not at all touristy. Well, tourists stay there, but mostly European ones. The hotel does not have A/C, but all the rooms face a small courtyard with loads of trees and plantings. I am 100% HEAT AVOIDANT (redhead, pale like a grub, and sweat unattractively from my face!) and have stayed here with no problem when it's hot outside. The courtyard is always cool, and you can throw open the windows. More about the hotel: it is SUPER clean, the front desk staff are unfailingly polite and friendly, and it's located in a darling little nieghborhood that is my vote for "best of village Paris." Rates are very reasonable... well within your range. We stay here every time we're in Paris - lately, about twice a year. Last visit was November 2010. The #72 bus gets within walking distance, and the hotel is blang between two Metro stops. There's tons of shopping on rue de Passy, including a spanking new Monoprix with a gigantic supermarket that features hot and cold takeaway food. There are cafes - a cute cinema - a school - a local street market - boutiques - bakeries - everything you need, in fact - nearby. Here's their website. If you email with questions, I can vouch for them getting back to you promptly. http://www.paris-hotel-hameaudepassy.com/
Consider the Hotel Louvre Sainte Anne. Not to be confused with nearby, larger hotels with Louvre in their name. Two blocks from Pyramides metro, Four blocks from Opera Garnier (CDG bus), Six blocks from Louvre Museum. Bus from Gare de L'Est stops nearby. Restaurants on the block do not harm the experience with noise or odors. Small (hard to find a vacancy), charming staff, fully renovated building with excellent split-unit air conditioners and newer bathrooms. I've stayed there for as little as 100 Euro/single, but it's worth paying more than rockbottom for the location and comfort. I stayed there in 2009 and 2011. Normal Parisian small rooms, but very clean and nicely done.
