PARIS: How to connect with great individual guides?

We are headed for a short 4-day visit in Paris. I would like to make the most of visits to historic sites to learn as much as we can. Are there small, less-spendy guide services or individuals that are recommended? (Did not spot these in Rick's books for Paris.) For example, would LOVE to find a SHARP university history student who guides at Notre Dame to help our family of 3 get the most out of our visit; to learn the most fascinating aspects on a short walking tour.

What I DON'T want to do is for our family of 3 to arrive at Notre Dame or elsewhere and be overwhelmed by crowds and approached by people hawking guide services. I found that very unnerving in Italy, for example.

How did you handle this? Who do you recommend? What are appropriate prices?

Thanks !

Wendy

You may want to check Craig's List in Paris. Often there are students that are willing to give tours.
