Trying to budget meals. What would be the average for 2 adults? Assume a light breakfast of coffee and pastry. Thank you.
Paris is an expensive place for restaurant meals. You should figure on 100 Euros a day for two people. That's pretty close to what my wife and I spent on our last several trips to Paris.
Well I am sure you know could be a huge range.. but i spend about 4-6 euros for breakfast( not at hotels, they are more ) I spend between 10-15 for a sit down lunch at a cafe,, usually a meal sized salad or a sandwich. I sometimes make lunch my big meal of the day, which means I would spend a bit more, 15-20 euros,, and sometimes I just grab a crepe and a drink from a street vendor and spend alot less, about 5-7 euros. Dinners can be had for for 15-25 euros,, or as cheap as 10-15,, or as much as well,, you get the idea.
I can eat very cheaply ,, then "splurge" on a nice dinner out,, ( which for me would be under 50 euros ,, although I have treated myself to a bit more usually once a trip. Note, when i say "dinners" I usually mean two or three courses, I usually order "le menu" ,, which means a set meal , sometimes with a choice or two, as opposed to ordering " a la carte"( carte is the french word for what we call a menu,, le menu is the french term for a set meal special, often written on a blackboard, but sometimes on the carte) By law all places must display their menu outside ,, so you can see the prices and offerings before you go in. House wine by glass or pitcher is usually good, and cheap,, coke and other sodas are expensive. Tap water is free, bottle water is offered, ask for tap water( une carafe d'eau) , they will bring it to you and its good too.
A way to economize is to have your main meal of the day at lunch time, not in the evening. The lunch menus, even at expensive restaurants, are much cheaper than the dinner menus. Some days you may want to pick up something at a charcuterie or a market and eat your evening meal in your hotel room, with a nice bottle of wine from Monopprix.
