I am aware that many of RS readers stay in these two hotels. Is one really better than the other? Your choice, and why? We will be in Paris July'09 for one week.
larry,
I've only stayed in the Grand Hotel Leveque so far, and would certainly recommend it. I found the rooms to be clean (although not luxurious) and the staff were great. The "beam me up Scotty" elevator was kind of interesting.
Either of those two Hotels would be a good choice, IMHO.
Happy travels!
I suspect that most of the readers here will have stayed in one or the other, but not both. You'll probably get richer comparisons at Tripadvisor.
Which one has air conditioning? We were in Paris for Bastille Day (14 July) two years ago and it was well over the 90's every day. We were so grateful that we had found a hotel with air conditioning. This was the Ibis near Gare du' Nord. Not a hotel with lots of character, but with a good price, breakfast, and friendly employees. Plus it was easy to walk 5 min. to the Metro.
Both hotels have recently been renovated but Lévêque has air conditioning. Lévêque also is a bit more expensive but you'll know if you have a confirmed reservation right away with their great site; Champ de Mars emails when and if they feel like it even if you've sent a fax with cc! (My favorite is actually Champ de Mars but they're both great.)
Hi Larry,
I styed at Hotel Du-Champs de Mars in early June a few years ago. The hotel was clean. The rooms were small. The staff was polite. There was no air conditioning. The hotel was very close to the Metro and in a safe location. I have never stayed at Hotel Leveque. I agrre with the prevois post - try to compare with Trip Advisor.
Thanks for all the advice. I suspect "AIR" makes Hotel Leveque the winner although a Bakery on the corner...nah, can't be that far away. Again, thanks
There's a bakery on the corner of Leveque, too. Same side of the street, turn left when you come out of the door. Bus 69 stops 1 minute away - like a free sightseeing trip to Louvre and Notre Dame, and ends up at Eiffel Tower in the other direction. I enjoyed staying at Leveque. Always kept a plate of fresh fruit in the room, nobody objected.....
Just as an aside, these are not the only two hotels in Paris, should you not be able to book a room when you need to, just as rue Cler is not the only interesting rue dans la ville. Bakeries abound elsewhere, too. I have never stayed on rue Cler but I did stroll down it once and found it to be disappointingly ordinary, considering all the attention it receives here.
Yes, I agree with Norma. In fact when we walked down the rue Cler on mornings from our hotel around the corner (Royal Phare) we were actually glad that were NOT staying on the rue Cler. It's a bustle of activity from early morning until late evening. It was much calmer and quieter just around the corner. By around the corner I literally mean walk to the end of rue Cler, turn right walk 30 steps.
Thank you for all the pros/cons. Trip adviser was also a help. As Darcy warned, I didn't get a return on my e-mail request from hotel du-Champ de Mars. I did from hotel Leveque and booked a room/confirmed the next day. "Air" is a biggie and we enjoy all the commotion in the Notting Hill/Portobello area of the UK so why not Rue Cler? Now, if we could just see Lance win the tour... Again thanks for your advice.
Just a note about the Leveque's online reservations... I made my reservation online and also received an email confirmation. However, when I called the day prior to my arrival to confirm, they did not have the room available that I was originally confirmed for. My only option was to stay in a more expensive room, which I did anyway. I should note that my reservation there was relatively last minute and maybe that had something to do with it. Just double check to be safe. I did enjoy the Leveque however.
