Does anyone have a recommendation for a hotel or B&B in West Paris near Place St Augustin or Gare St Lazare?
Have you checked any guidebooks, like maybe, oh say..... Rick Steves for example?
How close are you looking for? My fave hotel in Paris (http://www.yelp.com/biz/hotel-hameau-de-passy-paris#hrid:3P024_72xIaJeM2Qasi3-w/src:self) is a 10 minutes drive away....
I always thought Gare St Lazare was in the centre!

St Lazare is west of Kilometer Zero, therefore . . . .
yep! I've devoured and used very successfully Rick's Guide books since 2002. Love them...this time, however, in Paris, I would like a place near St Augustin and the Gare St Lazare which is a bit west of the Marais neighborhood.
Jane,
In my short time here I have seen many first time posters who apparently never thought to get a RS book, obviously you are not one of those. When I went to areas not covered in his books I used Google Maps typing in "Hotel boutique" or "hotel romantic" for example. If you start with the map centered only over the area you want to stay in, it will give only those results. Then there are all the combined reviews from all the review sites. With your B.S. filter turned on to sift through the reviews you can get a good idea of the hotel you are interested in. Then there are the street views if you are not familiar with the neighborhood (but it sounds like you already are).
