We will begin and end our trip in Paris, but after the first couple of days we need to take the TGV from Gare de Lyon to Annecy. At the end of the trip we will be arriving in Paris by TGV from either Avignon or Dijon. The first time we were in Paris we enjoyed a stay at Hotel Muguet in the 7th, but this does not seem convenient for getting to/from Gare de Lyon. We want to minimize dragging luggage up and down steps and making transfers. Can you recommend hotels under 200 euros that are either in the Gare de Lyon area (a short cab ride is OK) or on a direct Metro line to that station, but still in a good location for Paris sightseeing? We prefer a quiet location--not an area with lots of nightlife.
Kent, I'm inclined to agree that we should stick with the hotel we know and liked last time. If Muguet is full or too expensive, I'll consider other options.
Barry, thanks for the hotel website. Have you booked with them, and if so, what was your experience?
Hi Pat; how long ago at Muguet and how was it? We've got 4 nights booked there early May before heading off to Venice via Nice. As Kent suggested, won't even attempt the Metro with luggage and for a few bucks will take a taxi. Mind you, our 'bucks' go a very little bit further these days than yours..... finally. Geoff
Geoff--We stayed at Muguet in July 2004 for a week and were happy with the location (quiet but convenient to Metro, and several sites, including Eiffel Tower). We had a room on the top floor (6th) that had a view of the golden dome and steeple of the Eglise du Dome--pretty cool. The room was small (but we didn't spend much time there), the bed fairly comfortable, and bathroom seemed new. It was a little difficult to control the shower but the towels were nice. If you have a lot of luggage and/or don't want to climb steps, ask for 5th floor or lower--the elevator only goes to 5th so we had to walk up a steep curved staircase to get to our room.
We arrived 9:30 am and the room was ready an hour later. Of course, you can't count on early check-in.
They have a nice breakfast room but we did not eat there. Instead most mornings we went to a cafe on Rue Cler for coffee, hot chocolate, and croissants--tasty and inexpensive. (Sorry I don't remember the name.)
Thank you, Pat, and glad you answered the breakfast question without me asking. I'm fine with a croissant on the run but the missus prefers a sit-down cuppa tea and toast (she'll do fine in London, not so sure about Paris), but we'll 'sort it out'. Mme. Pelletier at Muguet seems nice but very businesslike (fine with me) and I guess the not eating in rooms rule will preclude a Golden Arches filet-O-fish fix. Looking forward to the trip and thanks again to you and Kent for the info. Geoff
