I am going to Paris for 6 days in early September and thinking about going to the flea market on Sunday. Is it worth it? If so, what is the best way to navigate it?
I ventured up to the market at Clignancourt when I was there in 2010 and it was bizarre and wonderful. I'm going back in September and am taking some friends with me this time, as it was a bit daunting being solo. I agree that the layout is baffling. You start down a sidewalk that you can't exit because of the booths/tents full of knock-offs and sneakers. But I eventually found the antique market and it was worth it! Great finds, great prices - you can get lost in there for hours.
We really love the Porte de Vanves flea market. You can find almost anything there. It is easier to navigate than the bigger Porte de Clingercourt. It is on Saturday and Sunday... different vendors on each day usually. We sometimes go both days. Go early. Metro is Porte de Vanves. When you come up out of the metro cross the street and turn right... also there is a nice little cafe ..indoors and out right on the corner. We like to go there when we are done .... sometimes my husband likes to stay longer and I wait for him outside at the cafe and have a drink and a sandwich and look through my treasures.
Something a little different that I enjoyed was a bird market on the Ile between Notre Dame and the S Chappelle. Also there were lots of flowers/plants available. It was on Sunday, although you should probably confirm that the timing hasn't changed.
