Kathy,many people prefer to take the train to say Caens or Bayeaux and then rent a car from there for a few days touring...do you mean as a daytrip or for an overnight?

This past spring, we visited Mont St. Michel. On the recommendation of many others on this site, we drove - arriving after 4pm. We wandered the street and ramparts before dark. We watched the tide come in while eating dinner at a restaurant with w view of the bay. Then wandered the street and ramparts again after dark. The mont is just magical lit up and night....and there were no crowds. We spent the night on the mont, got up early in the morning and visited the abbey before it got crowded with other visitors. We left by 11:00am. This was definitely one of the highlights of our trip!
