Paris Dining and Cooking

We will be in Paris for 8 nights at Christmas with an apartment in the 5th near Jussieu Metro. We are willing to take the metro to other areas; however, we would love to find great honest cheap French bistro/restaurants in the neighborhood if they exist. Also, markets to buy food for us to cook in the apartment. Does anyone know the area and have suggestions? We haven't been to Paris since 2001.
Thanks,

parisbymouth.com may be helpful in finding the restaurants and if you google Paris Street Markets you'll get the week days and the locations of markets in all the arrondissements. Don't dismiss stores like Monoprix and Printemps, among others, which have excellent grocery sections (dairy, meat, fish, wine, etc., included).

Jussieu metro is just a couple blocks from Blvd. St. Germain and a couple more blocks to the islands. Bistros abound in that area and there are several good restaurants on both islands. One of our favorites is Taverne Henri IV, on the very tip of Ile de la Cite at the opposite end from Notre Dame. Another great restaurant is Allard, 41 Rue Saint-Andre des Arts, 1-2 blocks just south of Pont St Michel, near St. Michel metro. I can't help you on markets since we always stay on Ile de la Cite but never use apartments. We have passed by many small shops in that area so you shouldn't have any trouble. I don't know if larger markets are open around Christmas but we always take in the Bastille market on Sundays where there are plenty of shops selling meats and produce, not sure about winter hours though.

We like Cafe Med on Ile Saint Louis. Very inexpensive and good.

Jussieu Metro isn't too far from the Rue Mouffetard, one of the oldest market streets in Paris.
