Heading to Paris and saw an article/link about the underground catacombs. Also saw a site which mentioned 'indefinately closed due to vandalism' (old site?). First, are they worth the visit? Second, are they still open? Thanks!
Without knowing your likes, dislikes, and how many days you have in Paris (and if your 1st visit), hard to answer for you. I loved it and it was definitely a good break from all the art museums, but there are a few things to be aware of. You enter in one neighborhood & come out fairly far from your starting point as you are walking underground through the tunnels. Also, to get back up to street level you will climb a number of stairs (so if you have anyone visiting with you with mobility issues, this is not the place for them). The ground can be damp & uneven. Wear good shoes. A small flashlight is helpful in some of the darker spots. If anyone in your group is claustrophobic, they may not like being underground and they will have a long walk to get back out and up to street level. Very young kids would probably be freaked out with all the skeletons. Great for 10 & up though. If you have never been to Paris before and are spending less than 5 days, you will probably not miss it unless the creepy & macabre atmosphere is something you really find interesting. I did the catacombs for the 1st time on same day as Pere Lachaise and it was a really fun and different way to spend time in Paris.
I went many years ago and did not really enjoy it: lots of old moldy bones in a damp and dark place, there are many others things to see and do in Paris above the ground!
I have walked the catacombs as recently as last year and I would definitely recommend them if you want to find a place to beat the heat and see some dead Parisians! There are some cool sculptures and spooky quotes about death down there too... It was a hot day in may when I walked through them and it was some very well appreciated respite from the sun.
don't know about the one in paris, but we did one in palermo. it is kind of macabre, and i wondered about what sort of spores we were inhaling! but, having said that, i will never forget it! my kids still talk about it - more about the weirdness than anything.
I thought they were incredible but like most things it depends on our personal likes and dislikes. If you go late in the day be sure to get in the line in time to make the cut off time. We were the last people who entered the catacombs the day we visited and the only reason we got in was because others got out of the line when the employees said they wouldn't get in. We just waited and made kit!
Have toured the catacombs twice and I think it is worth it. Some lighting has been added so a flashlight will not be needed. It has limited times as far as being open. I think I counted 89 steps to get back to street level.
I have done them at the insistance of teenage son,, and I am a bit claustrophobic.
They are unique and in my opinion they were worth it,, not just about seeing all the bones, the tunnels were used during WWII by the French Resistance,, and believe it or not , also the Germans, the tunnels are exstensive and you only see a small portion. They have been "renovated" and I personally didn't need a flashlight, I however did find it cool down there, great on a hot day, but take a sweater most other times.
Have you been to Paris before? I would say that if this is your first trip, and you aren't just thrilled to bits by the idea of walking underground surrounded by old bones, I would skip it. My personal tastes (and tattoos) run to the Goth, so for me, the catacombs qualified as a first trip visit. But again, if you haven't been to Paris yet, there is so freaking incredibly much to do above ground that you can probably give it a miss without regrets.
