Paris, Belgium, Amsterdam

We are planning our first trip to Europe for first week in June. We have 9 days and the first 5 will be in Paris (husband's job). For the remaining 3 days (since the 4 will be a travel day back to states), what is the best way to split the days? Bruges? Amsterdam? One or both??

With the remaining three days I would just go with Amsterdam. For a first time visit it's the perfect amount of time. The direct Thalys high-speed train will get you there in 3 hours:18 minutes; for cheap restricted fares book 90 days in advance at http://www.thalys.com.
Be sure the check out the annual World Press Photo show at the Oude Kerk(old church) it's always the "hot" ticket in town in June. The best photos from the past 12 months will be on display.

I would pick one or the other, not both. If you like cute little towns, go to Brugge, otherwise go to Amsterdam. I personally would just go to Amsterdam, but I prefer cities.

If you go 2 places in 4 days, you're going to waste time in transit and packing and unpacking. Amsterdam is a great choice and there are several nice day trips you can take from there if get through all the things that interest you in town.

You could day trip to Bruges from Amsterdam if you need to see both. But there is more to see in Amsterdam than in Bruges for the remaining days

I would say Amsterdam only. Bruges is quaint and really beautiful but Amsterdam has much more to see and do. Bruges would be a good "passing through" trip, but it doesn't sound like you have a lot of time.
