My family and I have the opportunity to take a side trip into Paris for 2 nights the weekend before Christmas. Would this be a worthwhile endeavor? Are there nice markets and activities worth exploring or is it 'just' a big city with decorations? Oh, we have already been to Paris once before in April. Thank you!
How about Christmas markets?
I was particularly impressed with the overall restraint and good taste of the Christmas decorations when I visited there several years ago for the holiday. But that was before I moved to Europe, and I now see that much of the continent shows the same sort of restraint around the holiday season. Meaning, you won't see any giant inflatable snow globes, or light-up plastic Frosties.
You don't say where your "side trip" is from. We spent last Christmas season in Paris, Strasbourg, Salzburg, York, and London. Paris, while nice, was the least attractive of the lot. If you are in Britain, I would definitely not go to Paris looking for Christmas splendor. If you are east of Paris, there are more festive choices.
Thank you David! We are living in Italy right now (US Army) but will be returning to the states at Christmastime. I was wondering if a long layover in Paris would be worth it, but perhaps we can do something better. Thanks again for your thoughts!
Yes, Tom, we too believe the US could take a few cues from how Europeans celebrate Christmas!! :)
I don't know your travel itinerary from Italy to DC. It it isn't set as yet, and you are looking for a stopover, I would strongly suggest London. Fly British Air and you can get discounts on hotel when you book air and hotel together on BA website.
