I'll be spending two weeks in Paris in September and I'm looking for a studio apartment that will be centrally located and safe for walking home at night. I've stayed in the Marais and liked it, but I wonder if there might be another area that would work for me. Thanks for any suggestions.
I have no specific recommendation but suggest you might like to read some of the reviews on www.slowtravel.com - they have a lot of reviews of apartments in Paris.
This is one I took particular note of

although for 2 weeks you may not want to put the bed up and down every night.
I have been to Paris several times with my sister or by myself. I would stay in any of arrondissements 1-6, the 9th (I stayed there in a hotel by myself and it was totally acceptable to be out and about at any time), or the 16th (a bit out of the way, but very nice). These are my recommendations. I've used www.vrbo.com to rent apartments in Paris, and also the apts. on this site link below look wonderful.
Hi Margie... Try vacationinparis.com.They have wonderful apartments listed by arrondissement and how many bedrooms. In the 7th arr. they have lovely apartments close to the Rue Cler area. They are very reasonable and you pay in dollars and can call to inquire in English.. in US ) We have used the 1- bedroom close to the Rue Cler.. there are2 in one building.Very reasonable.. very clean, very nice.
Thanks for the replies. I have bookmarked a number of apartment rental sites, including the ones mentioned as well as vrbo. What I'm hoping here is to get some suggestions for narrowing my search to a particular arrondissement or area of the city that will meet my needs for a central location that is still relatively quiet and secure. Thanks.
Margie, As I type this I am sitting in a one bedroom apartment in the 5th (Latin Quarter) owned by a woman in Marin County. I found it on VRBO, but she does list on other sites as well. It is so charming and is in a nice area. It sits between two metro stations, Cardinal Lemoine and Jessieu, and is only a couple of minutes walk to each station. I paid in dollars, not euros. If you would like more information just PM me. Good luck!
I stayed in a great place but I will have to go look up the website. Email me and I'll send you a link. I stayed in the Latin Quarter. That's the best place. I felt very safe going out in the evening and then I don't have to take the metro back home too late.
I think I've made my decision. I have found a studio in St. Germain de Pres that looks perfect. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions and links.
Margie, if you are still accepting suggestions, I stayed in a wonderful loft near Notre Dame. PM me if you want the link.
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I have mailed off today a contract to Thierry at Parisbestlodge.com for the St. Germain studio. I searched and searched and couldn't find anyone with anything bad to say about him or his properties. I'm thrilled to have locked in my lodgings...now comes the fun stuff!
I'm considering an overnight trip (by train) somewhere outside of Paris. Chartres has been strongly recommended, but I'm open to other ideas. I'm not big on military history so Normandie isn't calling to me, and I'd like to spend just one night away from my Paris home.
