Paris and South of France Tour pre/post Tour

We signed up for the tour in May and want to ask you for pre-trip and post trip ideas. We plan to arrive 2 days early at Paris, and then stay for 3 extra days at/near Nice. This tour no longer cover Normandy, so we are think of venturing out ourselves. And of course, I am sure we can find some sites to visit tight at Paris. The tour ends at Nice, which make me think to stay for extra days. Does this make sense? Any suggestion?

Beware the Cannes Film Festival -- May 13-24, 2009. I really don't know what to expect, but have posted a plea for advice here. See my message below. It seems to me that it might be quite difficult to avoid crowds, find hotels, etc. on the French Riviera when the Festival is in progress in Cannes. I just don't know how far awy you need to be (miles and/or days!) Someone, please help?

I was in Nice during the Cannes Festival and it wasn't overcrowded and I wouldn't have even known it was on unil I glanced at a local newspaper! There may have been a few more luxury yachts in the water though! Nice is beautiful and it is so easy to travel to the towns all around it by bus. The bus ride is very cheap as well! Eze is worth a trip to visit!

I would recommend taking the train to Bayeux on the day you arrive and staying out there for 2 nights. Then you can take the train back to Paris the day your tour starts. Usually they start in the afternoon.

It's an easy train ride - only one stop in between. Bayeux is a cute town and sign up for a bus tour of the WWII sights - like Battlebus. I really enjoyed Bayeux and the tour - even more then Paris and I'm so glad I went. I went for 3 nights and could have stayed longer and done more tours.
