Paris and London in December

My husband and I will be going to Paris and London in the middle of December and come back before Christmas. We are excited to see the Christmas lights and experience the holiday spirit, but we are concern about the weather since the climate history shows the two cities is around 45F degree in that time of the year. Coming from San Francisco, California, our weather rarely drop below 50F degree. How should we prepare for the cold weather in Paris and London? What are the essentials (besides big jacket and scarf) that we must pack? We will not rent a car, so we will be on our feet a lot. Do we need to wear boots and possibly ear muffs? Thank you so much in advance for your advises.

Cindy. No ear muffs, no, no. It will be a dampish cold and you will need gloves and a hat and a couple of scarves. I usually take my Australian waxed canvas raincoat to the UK or Paris in December, and lots of layers. One year I really felt not warm enough so I bought a big, colourful wool shawl to wear over the coat and that did the trick. If you don't have any of these cold weather items, buy them in Paris at Monoprix.

I would not wear boots or a heavy coat in 45 degree weather. Especially in the damp climate of NW Europe, these can become uncomfortably warm indoors and after walking around for a little while. Best to wear a fleece, windbreaker or even a waistcoat (+/- a hat, scarf and gloves) and layer underneath. Wear a normal comfortable pair of shoes, and only if you absolutely think you need them, insulated socks. Overall, London and Paris rarely experience harsh winters, although last year was an exception.

I live in London and the weather changes daily. Layers are the best. Bring gloves and scarves - if you plan on going to Paris first, buy your scarves there! Fantastic scarves in every color for Eur 5 each or less if you buy many (great gifts too). Found on most street corners, especially near the Galarie. Wear comfy walking shoes. I wear Merrels with gortex and water resistant. Not the boots. If you want to be a little more trendy, tall black boots with a flat sole would work as well. In December I will wear my slim pea coat in both cities. You do not want to be too bulky when walking around. You will be warm once you enter a museum or shop. Bring a travel umbrella. A nice hat would probably be worth bringing. Please do not wear a beret while in Paris. Possibly pack a pair of hose/tights in case one day you find it's too chilly and need an extra layer under pants/skirt. Feel free to email me if you have any q's about London.

YOu already have pretty good advice here. I'd add an umbrella, a small one that you can easily slip into your bag. I'd surprised if you didn't get any rain...

Katy says "Please do not wear a beret in Paris". I usually wear a beret in London, Paris & Montreal from December to March and have yet to be arrested.

I spent Christmas thru New Year's in London last year and it was freezing. Good news was there was no rain but I did pack a small travel umbrella which fit right into my purse. I agree with the posters who've suggested hats, gloves, scarves and layers. I would definitely emphasize layers...thermal underwear is great for really cold days. Good luck and safe travels!
