Paris and Loire in August

I read in a book yesterday that all of Paris goes on holiday to Italy during the last 2 weeks of August? Is this true? Should I avoid Paris then or does anyone else know of any places I should avoid for this type of reason? I will be traveling throughout western Europe for 2 months - August 9 through Mid October. Thanks in advance for your advice.

All of Paris does not go to Italy, what utter nonsense. Many Parisienes do go on holiday in August( but just as likely to the coast of their own country, not Italy in particular) , but it does NOT affect most tourists in the very least, in fact, many hotels have cheaper rates in August as the business travel is down. Some mom and pop shops close, and a few very nice restaurants, but honestly this is highly unlikely to affect you unless you are a real foodie who plans on some serious restaurant visiting.. Even then there will still be enough nice places still open.

All tourist sites stay open,, I know as I have gone to Paris in August quite a few times, and the few closures did not affect me . As I said, if you have a particular shop or resto you want to visit , check their website to see if they are open or not, but other wise go , just be prepared, it may be hot and stuffy( but many places are in August right?

Imagine Philadephia in August. Many resident flee down the shore (I'm a lifetime member of the Ocean City cult), but the city remains functional. Same with Paris... well, except Parisians probably don't go to Ocean City...

I had the experience of being in Paris in July and returning in August. It was startling how much slower the town gets. But it's kind of nice being able to get around without rush hour traffic on the metro. The places you should avoid are where the parisians go on holiday. These would be the riviera the basque area, like St Jean de Luz. Absolutely over run at this time.

Hahaha I am from hot and humid Philadelphia so I know what that is like. To me it's better than being cold!!
