I'm travelling to Paris next month & a member of my party requires a gluten free diet. Any suggestions in this beautiful city of croissannts & patisserie's ?
My advice would be to search for these places online before you go. France is not a country that lets you pick and choose what's in your food as America is known for. I would make a simple Google search for Gluten Free restaurants, write them down along with their addresses, and go from there. I'm sure a few options exist and that you'll have a WONDERFUL voyage!
Here's a site that might be helpful for you: http://www.davidlebovitz.com/2007/10/glutenfree-eati/
Rent a studio or an apt. and cook your own foods. Then you know what you have. Depending on the level of alergy, just eating food cooked in a pan that the previously was used to cook a rue could be bad news.
Mary, Celiac is not unknown in F1rance, get a transalation explaining the person has a gluten allergy and have it printed on a business size card, and hand it to waiter whenever you eat out. From what i understand their are transalations available on some websites that deal with Celiac or gluten sensitivities. That will help when language is an issue. I think your friend will be ok,, many people travel with such issues, I was on Rick Steves family tour where one child had a life threanting nut allergy, and the mom used the cards whenever we dined out, plus we had two members of one family with a gluten sensitvity, they brought some rice products and talked alot to waiters.. they did fine( and when we were in Italy one place even offered to make a rice pasta dish for them! Remember people are the same all over, your friend likely has to do alot of explaining to staff here when dining out, but with language issue it is trickyer,, so the cards may be helpful.
