My husband and I will be in Paris for 10 days at the beginning of September. We'd like to stay in a lively area (we're used to the Lakeview/Wrigleyville area in Chicago), but still affordable enough not to cut into our wine budget! (yet to be set) We're fine with a simple room (don't need tv or phone), as long as it is clean. On other trips in Europe we've stayed in private rooms in hostels and have been fine with that. Any recommendations? The Latin Quarter sounds like a promising area. I'd like to keep within $80 - $100 USD/night (total for both of us - is that totally crazy?!)
The Latin Quarter is indeed a promising area. Another area with inexpensive hotels and less-touristed nightlife is near Place Republique. The Hotel de Nevers is in your price range, clean, and midway between tourist Paris and neighborhood Paris.
VacationIN Paris.com lists two studio apartments in the 5th A. for $99 a night. They are a good company; reliable and easy to deal with.
I can only recommend the 2 hotels my wife and I stayed at. La Familia Hotel in the Latin Quarter and Hotel Champ de Mars in the Rue Cler area. Both were less than 100 euros but the price can be less depending on the time of year.
Just left an apartment in the 3rd. It was a block from Centre Pompidou and 1.5 blocks from Rambuteau Metro. Loved the area - lots of cafes and within walking distance of Notre Dame, Sainte-Chappelle, and Place des Vosges. We used Paris Attitude. They were fine, and I found the apartments to be a bit less expensive than Vacation in Paris. They have lots of studios available in your price range.
Look at this. We really enjoyed it. Nadine Giblin Studio 30 sqm Paris 9e near Montmartre E-mail : [email protected]

i stayed at hotel jeanne d'arc in the marais. clean, had a tv, very tiny bathroom. ask for an inside room, rooms on the street side are noisy. lively area at night.
65e/night, so lots of $ leftover for wine!!!
The 5th district is a very nice area, you have lots of bars, restaurants and shopping. It's also very safe and depending on the areas - calm - http://www.hotelsophiegermainparis.com/ is in a calm area of the 5th.
If you need other suggestions i'll be glad to help!
I have been to paris multiple times mostly 3-4 weeks at a time and have always rented an apartment with my family. We have always had luck with Lodgis.com, they have apartments in all price ranges and neighborhoods. Their customer service is great too. Haut Marias area near Republique is good, near the Republique metro. This trip we found a place near Chatelet, their email is: [email protected]. They rented us a place at around 75 euros a night (sleeps 4) with washer, microwave, coffee maker and cleaning/linens included.

If you can up your budget just a little (100 Euros), I think that this may fit the bill perfectly for you: http://www.jeudeclefs.fr/studio-quartier-latin_136.html
