8;15 am flight out of Orly back to the states. Staying next to the Pompidou centre. We're thinking that an arranged Taxi around 5:30 a.m. will be let us rest assured we'll get there on time. What is your personal experience with aranging a taxi in Paris, especially at 5:30 am. Thanks!
Really, you need to BE at the airport by 5:15, not leaving Paris by 5:30. If you want to take a taxi from Paris you need to book one for about 4:45 am. I would be much happier spending my last night at an Orly hotel, such as Ibis. Any problems on the route to Orly by cab and you are totally out of luck.
Even if the hotel arranges it, sometimes they show, sometimes they don't. Metro and RER aren't awake in time, so your only backup is finding a taxi rank. Norma's right on the times. Do what she said.
Absolutely do what Norma says. The transport our hotel booked for us was a van that made 3 more stops to pick up other passengers, we were lucky as we had plenty of time. Don't even chance it.
I have taken early flights from a lot of european cities and have had no taxi problems. The hotels usually have a favorite taxi company and come on time. The larger hotels have taxi's waiting outside all the time. There is an extra change to have a taxi come and pick you up at the hotel.
Our last hotel on a RS tour of Paris and South of France booked us a taxi for an early morning flight and we paid the hotel the fee for the taxi. The taxi did not show at the appointed time so after waiting an additional 15 minutes I had the desk call the taxi company back and they told the desk clerk (supposedly) that they had no record of the request. After getting a refund from the hotel desk I was fortunate enough to see an unoccupied taxi cruise past the hotel, flagged it down and after explaining our situation to the taxi driver, got a quick trip to the airport. Taxi drive also got a big tip. Lesson learned: If relying on a taxi for an airport trip "off hours" be sure to allow enough time for a back up incase the first taxi does not show.
Charlie's lucky that worked since most taxi's don't cruise around looking for fares, due to the price of gas and all. Additionally, taxi ranks are fairly widespread and it's against the law for a moving taxi to pick up a fare within X-zillion (number disremembered) meters of a taxi rank.
