Paris: 2 Nights In September, Where Would You Stay?

My wife and I will be in Paris for two nights in mid-September, a side trip courtesy of crazy cheap inter-country flights. Any suggestions for clean, mid-price good hotels? We'd like to be centrally located, if possible. Merci, mes amis!

My daughter and I are spending a week at Hotel de la Place du Louvre, which is a mid-priced hotel, and within a mile of many sites - directly across from the Louvre.

In mid-September I will be staying at the Hameau de Passy hotel, in the 16th. Not centrally located, but I have stayed in central locations for 4 previous trips and am looking forward to checking out this area. I've stayed at the Beaugency in the rue Cler area (recommended by Rick) -- any of his hotels in this area would be good.

John,
When we were there a couple of years ago we stayed at the Hotel Sevres (Azur) (their web page is www.HotelSevresAzur.com) between Saint-Germain-des-Prés and Montparnasse. It wasn't in Rick Steves' book, but a friend of our who uses Rick's recommendations everywhere he goes recommended it. It was a bit off the beaten track, which we liked, but it was close (about 2 blocks) from the Saint Placide metro stop. This was our first and only time in Paris, so we have nothing to compare it to, but the rooms were nice (not big, but then we never spend much time in them anyway), the staff was friendly, and the cafe au lait was wonderful with the breakfast. It really felt like a RS experience.

You'll absolutely LOVE Paris. Read through Rick's Paris book before you go. He's got a lot of great suggestions on places to go and things to do.

It almost doesn't matter where you stay, as long as you're near a Metro stop. Just spent a week at the Hotel Littre, on Rue Littre, near the Montparnasse rail station. A Metro stop is right around the corner, and the neighborhood is full of lively cafes.

We have stayed at Hotel Relais St. Sulpice twice now, and loved it both times. (Just got back a week ago). It was listed in Rick's 2004 book (the most recent version I own), a Fodors Choice selection, and written up in the NY times Travel section.

The hotel has a wonderful breakfast area, large modern in-room baths and rooms overlooking an ivy-covered central courtyard. The staff speaks English and is very helpful. Prices start at 170 Euros.

It is in the 6th directly across from St. Sulpice church, and the location is ideal: Walk 5 minutes north and you're at Rue di bucci (Rick's 'heart of the left bank'); walk 5 minutes south and you're in Luxembourg Gardens. In between, there are dozens of cafes, creperies, and boutiques right out your door. Favorites for us include Crepes du Clown on Rue Canettes, Les Editeurs Cafe on Carefour du Odeon and the mind boggling Gerard Mulot patisserie on Rue de Seine.

My husband and I stayed at a Hotel De Nevers near Place de La République. Great spot at a great price! They have a website.

John, I suggest you consider the unique Hotel Esmeralda... located just across the Seine from Notre Dame cathedral ... about as central as they come. This hotel has a small number of rooms, all with reasonable prices ... you may need to book soon if any are available for your dates. See the reviews of past patrons ... this web site:

bon voyage... P.

There are so many good ones. Alot of folks I chat with stay at Hotel Bonaparte in St.Germain, cost E100-125 with breakfast in your room or in their dining room.

There is a bus, metro stops out your door as well as many cafes and places to buy goodies
each day for meals or snacks.

We stayed at Hotel de la Bourdannais. It is too pricey for the condition of the rooms but a great
location. Cost was E125-150 in May 06'.

john,
i was in paris in 2005, and stayed at the hotel cluny sorbonne, great location in the latin quarter, across from the sorbonne university, near the pantheon, within walking distance of many sights. very near the beautiful luxembourg gardens.
clean, reasonable rooms in a good area. seemed very safe there, day or night. walls are thin, bathrooms are tiny, as is the elevator, but probably the best buy in paris for not alot of money. i was with 4 other family members, and we absolutely LOVED it.

Thanks to all who offered ideas! I actually tried many of these places, and found them booked. :( However, we found lodging in one of Rick's suggested hotels, and are set. Au revoir tout le monde!

Oh - what hotel did you find? I'm going with my sisters the end of August and am having trouble finding a economically priced place...
