We will be staying in Amsterdam for a week in Aug. Is it feasible if we have about 3 extra days to take a train to Paris?
Jennifer, absolutely! The train trip is a little over 3 hours. Just returned from both cities, hope you have a great time!
It's a three or four hour train ride if that's the question. Amsterdam Centraal to Paris Nord.
Most definitely ! 3 hour trip one way with enough time to see the highlights of Paris.
Would it be better to fly?
No. Look where the aiports are. Figure lead time for security. The train will be faster.
Best way to purchase train tickets?
Check schedules and purchase tickets here: http://www.thalys.com They use airline style pricing so the sooner you book the cheaper it will be (90 days allowed).
There are about half a dozen Thalys trains from Amsterdam to Paris every day, the ride is 3-1/4 hours. If you can, fly open-jaw. If not, it's still worth it to return to Amsterdam for the flight home. The Thalys stops at the Schiphol airport on the way to Amsterdam. Flying would be crazy. Just the extra travel time between the train station and the airport at each end would be almost 2 hours.
