Since Paris was eliminated from "the South of France" trips for 2013, we would like to spend about three days in Paris before the trip. We would like suggestions for "moderate" hotels to stay, preferably around area of Notre Dame to the Eiffel Tower.
It was just exactly one year ago that we stayed at the hotel Home Latin in the Latin quarter just a few blocks from Notre Dame, the Pantheon and the Luxembourg Gardens. It was reasonably priced and being on a side street it was also very quiet. The room was nice, breakfast was extra but it was good and fueled you for most of the day. Wish were back there now. Wherever you stay, have a great time.
My husband and I just returned from a 3 week trip to France & Belgium. In Paris, we stayed at the Hotel Diana in the Latin Quarter for 5 nights. Its 2 blocks to the Cluny, less than 10 minutes to Notre Dame. Fantastic location and hotel. We paid a bit extra (160Euros) for the superior/deluxe room. It was on the top floor, HUGE bed and huge bathroom. All recently remodeled, with A/C and a lift and a lovely breakfast including coffee, tea, cereals, yogurts, pastries, french bread ... and the MOST AWESOME croissants (which set the bar for the rest of our trip --- they couldn't be beat). The Proprietor, Therese, and her staff are Amazing. Personable, helpful, go out of their way to accommodate their guests. We arrived during a horrible heat wave... on Sunday August 19 it was 100F. A/C worked but not very well so Therese went out and bought us an electric fan which really helped. On our checkout she gave us a discount for bearing with the terrible heat during our stay (she's planning to install a 2nd A/C unit in that top floor room so it should be better for the next set of travelers). I cannot praise the Hotel Diana enough. It's truly a fantastic place to stay in a wonderful location. I HIGHLY recommend it.
We stayed in Hotel Duquesne, which is near the Eiffel tower. If you request a room with an Eiffel Tower view, you will be able to enjoy a wonderful view from your balcony. You will pay more but it was worth it to us. It was moderate at €160/night in 2010. They've remodeled since then but it's worth checking it. You can also friend them on Facebook as they frequently post in English and in French about local events, what's going on at the hotel, etc. we really liked it there.
I have stayed in both these places. They are clean, nice staff, small rooms as is normal for Paris, a/c , mini fridge , comfy beds, but decor is "motel" like. I would stay at both again because price and locations are very good. Hotel Diana
Hotel Eugenie
We are going to Paris and Provence in late Sept-Oct, so we haven't actually tried this out yet, but friends recommended using the site <airbnb.com> and we found an apartment for rent that is very reasonable (about 80 euro/night). WE have booked it, and are looking forward to a good location near Place de la République. There are places listed all over the city, but we were looking fairly late for this trip, so some of the places that sounded great were no longer available for the dates we wanted. I'd suggest you take a look, though, as you might find exactly what you're looking for if your trip is in 2013.
We were on a Rick Steves Paris city tour in May 2012. After the tour we stayed for a few days at the Hotel du Champs de Mars. This hotel is a few steps from Rue Cler and close to the Eiffel tower and metro stop. We thought it was a good value at 115 euros per night.
Grande Hotel Jeanne d'Arc is in the Marais, a pleasant walk from Notre Dame, and an interesting neighborhood. Prices are quite reasonable, and it's on a small alley, so it's relatively quiet.
