Pamplona, Burgos, Leon, Astorga

Hello, My husband and I are planning a Camino De Santiago Pilgrimage in mid-May starting from Astorga and wanted to do some sight seeing before that. We have limited time, so we were wondering whether it is worth spending about a day in each of the following: Pamplona, Burgos, Leon and Astorga or instead spend more time in Madrid (right now we we only have time for 1 day in Madrid if we want to go to all these other places)? What do you think? Any suggestions? This is our first time in this area of Spain. Thank you very much! Milena

If you start with Pamplona (which really isn't much) plan a stop in nearby Olite to visit the great little castle there. San Sebastian is also a nice place in the summer and just a short drive from Pamplona. From Pamplona I'd recommend Burgos (maybe a quick day stop in Vitoria, the heart of the Rioja wine region), Valladolid, and Salamanca before starting your hike in Astorga. All three are nice. Near Valladolid are three of Spains greatest castles, La Mota in Medina del Campo, Coca, and Penafiel. If you like castles, these are some of the most inspiring.

I don't know where Astorga is, but Burgos and Leon are both on the Camino. Both have incredible cathedrals and are worth a visit (particularly Burgos, IMO). I would probably skip Pamplona and add the day to Madrid instead.
