we are stopping on Palma Majorca for 7 hrs along our cruise with the Norwegian Epic. Can you tell me if we can get a good tour of the island on our own or if we should sign up for an excursions of the train to Soller? It looks interesting and the cost is $99 each. Can we get ourselves to the train for a tour cheaper and still safe? Thanks for your help,
Heather
As I remember, the cruise port is not walkable from town, and this is a busy location even in shoulder season. If you are there in season, I would worry about traffic (!), and suggest you use a Norwegian excursion so that they are responsible for your returning on time. The city is historic enough, I wouldn't worry about missing the rest of the island. (Opinion.)
Heather, we have the exact same situation in September. After doing some research we decided to do the train to Soller. This is probably the only port where we will take a Norwegian excursion. We normally do our own thing and don't particularly like the excursions offered by the cruise line but with the short time in port we thought the train made the most sense. This excursion got good reviews on cruise critic
When we were there about two years our ship docked the edge of the commercial area. About a mile walk or so to the big Cathedral at the other end of town. There was a hop on/off "train" that made a big loop through the city and up to the old castle/fort overlooking the city. We took and caught a walk touring of the old castle. I am sure PM has a web site to determine if the train is still in running. Our two sons and one daughter in law hired a taxi driver for the day to take them to an old volcano or mountain. I think they paid him 50e for five or six hours. We have often had good success hiring a taxi driver to take us around when other options are limited. Don't know anything about the train to Soller
