I took the local commuter rail from the center of Paris and then walked about 5 minutes to get to the Palace.
As long as the weather is good on the day you choose, it's definitely worth the time it takes to get there. Not sure when you're going, but if it is summer, get the first train out of Paris in the morning to avoid huge crowds. Hit the Palace first and then the gardens. It wasn't too crowded when I first got there, but within an hour the Palace was packed and I escaped to the gardens and grounds. Hardly anyone over at the Trianon and Petit Hameau (probably why I enjoyed those the most) during mid-day.
When you get to your nearest RER station (regional rail network) you can purchase a combination ticket that will give you a round-trip journey out to Versailles and admission. It's called a "Forfait Loisirs Chateau de Versailles." (Un for-fay lwah-ZEER chatto deh verr-SAIE, seel voo play). It's on the RER C-5 line (Versailles-Rive Gauche). See http://www.ratp.info/informer/anglais/index.php# for RER and Metro maps. Cost should be about 21 Euro or so.
For me the special part of Versalle was not the palace, it was the grounds. I could have spent days just walking the paths and exploring. Take the RER, spend the day and enjoy. Well worth the trip.

I agree with all of the above, train is easy and frequent.
