I would love to buy one or two oil paintings at Montmartre. I was planning on buying them from "street artists" not art galleries. This should be a little cheaper. Does anyone know how much are they?
Whatever they can stiff you for. Haggle.
We were there a couple weeks ago and I wanna say there were about $200. They weren't that big either. Really pricey.
They're very expensive, a tourist rip-off.
Sadly, I have to agree with everyone here. If you find someone painting something that you REALLY like, then, yes, you will need to haggle, and be pretty persistant. Everything on Montmartre, pretty much, is a toourist-trappy rip-off. As for the "street artists" themselves.... in NYC, there are lots of "artists" selling "their paintings" who turn out to be selling mass-produced canvases that they either buy in bulk, or sell for someone who does the buying. To be absolutely sure, you should probably watch the artist PAINTING the painting. And then - it might not be for sale! Personally, I wouldn't buy a thing at Montmartre. Well, maybe a beer.
Kira says "tourist trappy rip-off" Let me add one more adjective, "tourist trappy crappy rip-off.
Have you ever seen them? It looks all very interesting and arty on videos, but the art is generally poor and priced for tourists. If you want some art to remind you of Paris, explore the galleries. i diont want to discourage you from visiting, but keep your money in your pocket. Enjoy the view from the terrace and the back streets behind Sacre Couer
It is touristy, and maybe a little bit of a rip off, but can also be a bit of fun to walk around and check things out for yourself. We did not buy an oil painting, but did buy a small watercolored painting for 10 euros. We gave it to my sister-in-law as a gift and she liked it. I suppose the price would depend on the size of it. Sorry cannot be more helpful regarding the price. What are you comforable paying? Set a budget for yourself, and I'm sure you'll find something within that range.
Buy with the understading that you are not necessarily paying for the quality, but the remembrance it will bring.
