packing for Germany and Switzerland

My husband and I are going on the 14 day trip to Germany and Switzerland in early July. Will we need sweaters for the Alps? We will arrive in Frankfurt a day prior to the tour. Can you recommend a good hotel near Trier?

Yes, always count on having a sweater (or fleece or some such) in the Alps. A lightweight rain coat is a must, too. For that matter, light hat & gloves wouldn't hurt. Yes, sounds like a lot for early July, but one never knows. I've experienced a wide range of temps & weather in the mountains (here & there) even in high summer.

Believe it or not, it occasionally snows in the Alps in July... but it usually only falls at the very high elevations. Below the alpine level (where most hotels are located), the precipitation comes down as rain. However, this isn't very common, you are more likely to experience warm days with moderately cool nights. A sweater and some rain protection would be a good idea. A hat, gloves, scarf and full winter gear would be overkill, though.

I lived in southern Bavaria for some years and during the summer months I found we had a thunderstorm about once a week. It wouldn't last long and then the nice weather would be back. A roll up mac stops you getting caught short and some sensible footwear, ie not sandals unless you enjoy wet feet. Alternatively dive into a local hostelry.
