We are looking for a one night stop over between Chamonix and Paris. This is the end of a three week trip and we would like to stay somewhere memorable. Can you suggest a nice midway point in this area and possibly a memorable place to stay as well. Again we are looking for old small town feel and I appreciate any feedback.
I went on the Villages and Vineyards of Eastern France tour in 2009 and we stayed in Beaune. It was absolutely beautiful and quaint. I highly recommend it!
Carol , a strong second for April's suggestion for Beaune . It's compact and beautiful . If you go try to see the Hotel Dieu , a charity hospice from 1443 . It's a striking place and the story behind it will change your perceptions of life in the past .
Third vote for Beaune-we stayed in Les Jardins de Lois and it was our favorite B&B for our month in France in June/July. Easy to find with private parking and short walk to the center of town. Breakfast was above the norm for France. Send p.m. if you'd like more info.
Another vote for Beaune! Loved it.
Thank you I know it is unfortunate to stay only one night here but Frane is pretty big place and I had to make hard choices on time. I am looking at Beaune now and saw a lovely stay at Le Cedre. Looks high priced but we wanted a Chateau like experience and this seems to come close. Since we are so time limited I may look for a place right near the old section so I need to check out where Le Cedre really is. Thanks for your help. Caroline
We also enjoyed Beaune-stayed at Hotel Remparts which is walking distance to everything you want to see in Beaune. For a chateau-like experience I think you would need to find accommodation a few miles outside of Beaune. Hotel LeCep is well located but more expensive than Remparts. This hotel has parking if you will need it and is also walkable from the train station-a flat easy walk even with luggage.
Havent stayed there but did spend a day in Beaune. Lots to see in a fairly compact area. Enjoyed lunch. Definitely recommend it
Hotel Villa Fleurie, a Rick Steves suggestion, is a nice, less expensive hotel with a lovely ambiance and nice breakfast. Easy parking, easy walk into the center of town. Le Cep is gorgeous but spendy. It has a great location and is beautiful. Beaune is a wonderful choice - lots of things to do, or just a town where you can wander around the pedestrian area and have one last chance to soak in the beauty of France!
Beaune is a great choice, no less brilliant for being obvious. I would just observe, however, that if you are really only spending the night (arrive late, leave early) it may not be the best choice. It's not a huge place but there are multiple sights to see as well as walking the ramparts and seeing a bit of wine country. A smaller, and very pretty, alternative might be Vezeley.
We stayed in Beaune at the Hotel Des Remparts and found it charming and very comfortable. Check them out at hotel-remparts-beaune.com. The location is great and the town is so easy to do on foot. It's definitely an "old small town". We had a wonderful meal at Abbaye De Maizieres. This was a few years ago, so I don't know if they're still there.
Beaune is nice. So is Semur-en-Auxois. R.S. "France" guidebooks have good info.
It's funny that Vezely was mentioned as I have read wonderful things about the town as well. With all the great Beaune votes, I had not thought about Vezely again until now hmmmmm. We will be arriving in Beaune at about noon and can leave the next day in the afternoon. Its a three week trip with the last visit in Burgandy. Since we did not have a chance to stay in a Chateau in the Loire - it looks like there are some nice choices here. I want to end the trip with a treat to remember our three week love affair with France. Thanks its been fun reading. This trip is starting to really come together and I have only Provence and Chamonix left to figure out. Caroline
My husband and I stayed at a wonderful B&B in Ozenay. We rented a car and visited Beaune and other surrounding small towns and castles. It was the highlight of our trip. The place we stayed was a winery called Chateau de Messey. I believe the owners have changed since we've been there, but it still gets great reviews.
