I am considering to buy sleeping train tickets from those desinations. We're a family of 5 so we may buy the one with 6 sleepers. Any advice re which site to buy, what kind of beds...et al. thanks

Steve's right on both counts. We took the Vienna-Venice overnight train a year ago, so just a couple thoughts to add:
When I purchased the tickets, the OBB site was pretty user-friendly, but at a certain point in the transaction it switched from English to German irrevocably, and I don't speak German. :-) So if you have questions about the kind of beds you're purchasing or how the ticket works, do know that OBB has great customer service via email. They answered all my questions and helped us get the right ticket.
Also, the Vienna-Venice train is fabulous! Not the sleekest train, but a great overnight option. Have fun!
