I'm looking for town suggestions for an overnight on the East side of the Rhine within an hour West of Frankfurt. We fly home from Frankfurt and hope to stay along the Rhine for the final night of a 4 week trip. Coincidentally, that final night one of our favorite bands (Muse) plays an outdoor concert at St. Goarshausen at the Freilichtbühne Loreley. I know nothing about the East side of the Rhine as our past visits (and tourism info) is concentrated on the West side. I also know nothing about the concert location other than google indicates we could ferry from St. Goar then drive to the venue. We would stay in St. Goar but everything seems to be booked up (it's a Friday in July), and the ferry/drive combo seems a bit complicated. For these reasons it seems like it would be better to stay on the East side of the Rhine assuming we can find a place. Does anyone have a suggestion where to stay which would not be too difficult to get to St. Goarshausen for the concert and then to FRA for a 9 am flight?
The east side of the Rhine is served by commuter trains just like the west, so anywhere should suffice. Don't laugh at the name, but Assmannshausen looks like a pleasant town. Further up stream, Rüdesheim, Oestrich and Eltville are all very attractive. And if nothing is open there, you can always go with Wiesbaden or Mainz.
St. Goarshausen itself has rooms. Lauer private B&B Nassauer Hof Colonius Kaub is a nice town (and there's a new, flashy hostel there in an ancient old building) and closer to St. Goar than the ones mentioned above. Braubach is about 20 minutes north of there by train, also a nice town, and home to Marksburg Castle. Kamp Bornhofen is closer but quite a dull place, IMO. Of course, you can stay in Oberwesel, Bacharach, or Boppard and use the ferry (which shuttles across all day long, shutting down only at midnight.) at St. Goar to cross the river - nothing complicated, just drive on and pay, then drive off. The Freilichtbühne can be reached on foot by a staircase/trail that goes STRAIGHT UP from the south end of St. Goarshausen to the top of the Loreley cliff, where the concert venue is. I once walked up the road (long way around) and down the staircase. But that is one steep staircase trail.
